Welcome! Thank you for visiting hdpoetry.com, dedicated to the poetry of
H. D. Wagener
and offering a primer on the theory and practice of meditation.

Beginning as a teacher and consultant in geology/geochemistry, H. D. Wagener has moved into twenty years of meditation on and study of Hindu, Christian and Buddhist scripture and mystical literature.

As a member of the volunteer faculty of the Osher Life-long Learning Institute (OLLI) of the University of Southern Maine, H. D. offered courses in the Perennial Philosophy, and courses related to living the meditative life (a spiritual life), including basic instructions in meditation, passage meditation and the practical wisdom of the meditative life.

A Virginian, H. D. emigrated to Maine and lives with his third wife, Marion Lundgren, in Portland. His children are scattered from Maine to New York to California. H. D. has a number of families, actually: his birth family; three families by marriage; an international family or web of householders associated with the Blue Mountain Center of Meditation in Tomales, California, pioneers in the quest for mystical union; his spiritual fellows in
the Portland, Maine, Friends Meeting (Quakers); and the Sisters of the Presentation of Mary and others associated with Marie Joseph Spiritual Center in Biddeford Pool, Maine

The link between poetry and meditation
- H.D. began writing poetry in his mid-thirties. Ten years later, he began to realize that writing poetry was a part of his slowly emerging spiritual life. The spiritual life centers on daily meditation on spiritual passages (passage meditation), use of a mantrum, and other disciplines outlined near the end of the Meditate page. It became clear that as poetry and H.D.’s spiritual life could not be separated, neither could poetry and meditation. Earlier poems by H.D. had to be revised as his spiritual understanding grew.

Please visit
the Poetry page for selected examples of H.D.'s poems. You can find out more about H.D.'s poetry on the About page. If you enjoy what you find on these pages, please check out H.D.'s Books. The Meditate page offers basic instructions in meditation, primarily based on the teachings of Eknath Easwaran.
